Bird flu is an infection caused by the viruses that come from birds. This type of influenza is also known as the avian flu. This virus is deadly because it can infect not only birds, but it can infect human beings too. And if this spread of disease is on a large scale, it can cause alarms as it can snowball into a bird flu pandemic. The bird flu viruses that cause the infection are, surprisingly, inherent among birds. They naturally dwell inside birds’ intestines. But the infection only occurs when there is contamination of the virus.

So how is the virus being spread? The influenza virus is being scattered by the infected birds through their saliva, nasal secretion and feces. Any other birds or human who made contact with these secretions will be infected by the virus. ‘Contact’ may be made either by means of ingestion or inhalation. This is a very contagious disease among the birds and poultry stocks.

Avian bird flu in domestic poultry is categorized in two main forms. It is identified in the low and high extremes of the virulence. This is commonly observed in the area of poultry stocks. Chicken flu is among the family of this avian flu that infests all breeds of chicken. The low pathogenic forms cause only mild symptoms such as ruffled feathers and low egg productions. But the low pathogenic form is mostly undetected. The high pathogenic form affects multiple internal organs and the mortality rate is a soaring 90 to 100 percent within 48 hours. This form spreads at a high rate among poultry animals.

Bird flu pandemic was recorded as one of the most devastating human epidemic. The disease, theoretically, can spread rapidly from person to person, since the human body has very little natural immunity to this kind of influenza. However, there is no evidence yet gathered which can prove that bird flu infected humans can transmit the airborne influenza to another human being. The fear as of now is that avian flu has the ability to change, mix, or blend in with other viruses to form a new kind of bird flu pandemic.

So let us understand this dangerous virus better and prevent it from spreading further. With the hope that scientists can come up with a vaccine to fight the flu virus, everyone needs to do their part of prevention and awareness to prevent a global chaos of bird flu pandemic.
