The bird flu pandemic of recent years is not the first flu pandemic that has scared the population of the world. In fact, in many times in the history of the world, virus infections, plagues, flu pandemics such as a bird flu pandemic have terrified the population. This is understandable as human beings are, of course, human beings. In that regard, they are not machines and their bodies will falter and fail under the strain of exposure to viruses and germs and certain contagious viruses and diseases.

Small pox, for example, killed many thousands of people in Europe. Even when these people became inoculated to the deadly dangers of small pox contamination, the killing did not stop in Europe. When people traveled from Europe to North America and the Caribbean, many of the native Americans and indigenous people of the new world succumbed to the deadly exposure to small pox germs as they had not developed an immunity to the condition. Over one hundred thousand people died as a result of this exposure.

Granted, a flu pandemic such as a bird flu pandemic has not wrecked such havoc as the deadly small pox exposures of the 18th and 19th century, but the possibly catastrophic consequences of exposure to a bird flu pandemic remind humans that they are humans and can suffer from the frailties that the human body suffers. There is no way of making one’s body totally immune to any disorder and the specter of the bird flu pandemic of Asia is a grim and serious reminder of this reality.

So how does one survive a bird flu pandemic? Unlike the small pox era, today the world has a greater understanding of medicine and a greater sense of duty of protecting all people of the world. Hopefully, humanitarian aid and education will curtail this flu pandemic before it reaches catastrophic levels.
